These classes are about connecting with yourself through your voice. We approach the voice as a tool of inner work and as a practice of self-transformation, and cultivate singing as a sacred art and spiritual practice that helps open our ears and heart for deep listening. You get to strengthen the relationship with your voice (both outer and inner) and experience the powerful energy of group singing.
The use of sound and vibration in yoga is as old as yoga itself. Nada Yoga, the yoga of sound/vibration, is about going beyond words and limitations of the mind to connect with the deeper parts of ourselves. Immersing into sound, especially your own voice, creates inner space for experiencing yourself and the present moment very intimately. It helps you to ground in the steady, sustained inner stillness behind everyday reality - the home of your authentic self. As a result, you likely experience increased harmony, inner peace and vitality. Stress and anxiety usually just melt away and among many positive physiological effects, you also strengthen your respiratory and immune systems.
In the classes, we open up ourselves for sound with gentle movement and pranayama and then focus on the meditative and healing vocal practices of Nada Yoga, especially from the ancient Dhrupad tradition of India - the “soul of Indian music”. You will learn to use the Indian musical alphabet Sargam and the mantric Dhrupad syllables, gradually discovering the magical world of Indian ‘medicine melodies’, ragas.
The practices used are simple, and no prior experience or musical background is needed. We sing safely in a group where you can focus on listening to yourself and be just the way you are in that moment.
